Adults and Orthodontics, from Dr. Davis

Wednesday, February 29th, 2012

My experience with adults that need orthodontic treatment is that they wish they would have done it at a younger age. As an adult, they are less receptive to the thought of having metal brackets and sometimes even clear brackets attached to their teeth. Some do not realize that even adults can have braces.

In most instances, Invisalign is a great alternative to having brackets attached to the teeth. There are less emergencies, no pokey wires or loose brackets. In fact, there are almost zero emergencies with Invisalign. People can speak normally with Invisalign, and the fee is the same as regular braces.

When any patient is apprehensive about treatment, we communicate more with that patient. Here at Davis and Davis Orthodontics, we find what makes the patient apprehensive and try our best to address it. Sometimes we can do things different to accommodate someone but, generally, explaining everything in detail is a great start.

If you have been considering orthodontic treatment, don’t hesitate to give our office a call!

Drs. Davis, reminding your to protect your mouth

Tuesday, February 21st, 2012

With winter sports under way for a lot of our patients, and spring approaching, Drs. Dale and Lisa Davis thought it would be a good time to remind our young athletes wearing braces to take care of both their mouth and appliances while participating in sports.

More than half of the seven million sports and recreation-related injuries that occur each year are sustained by youth between ages 5 and 24. Sixty-seven percent of parents say their child does not wear a mouth guard, yet, 70 percent say their biggest fear when their child plays is that they will get hurt. Despite the risks, many kids are still not wearing mouth guards and facial protection during games and practices.

Many people think a mouth guard is effective just to protect your teeth. But research has shown mouth guards can also reduce lower jaw impact that causes concussions and other dental injuries. At Davis & Davis Orthodontics, we provide customs mouth guards (starting at $20) and Under Armour mouth guards (starting at $39.99).

We hope this helps you remember to always wear a mouth guard and other forms of protective gear when participating in sports. We encourage you to give us a call if you have any questions about mouth guards at our office, or ask us on Facebook!

Presidents’ Day Fun Facts!

Friday, February 17th, 2012

Monday, Feb. 20 marks Presidents’ Day, a day known for celebrating of both George Washington’s and Abraham Lincoln’s combined Birthdays. Presidents’ Day was created in 1971, when President Richard Nixon combined the birthdays of two of our most well-known presidents into one single federal holiday. Presidents’ Day also marks a hard-earned day off from work and school for a lot of our patients at Davis & Davis Orthodontics.

Here are a few fun facts about our nation’s presidents:

*Abraham Lincoln, our 16th president, carried letters, bills and notes in his tall stovepipe hat.

*George Washington is the first president to be featured on a postage stamp.

*Ronald Reagan, our 40th president, broke the so-called “20-year curse,” in which every president elected in a year ending in zero died in office.

*Abraham Lincoln was the tallest of the U.S. presidents, measuring 6’ 4” tall.

*Virginia is the birthplace of more United States presidents than any other state, followed by Ohio and Massachusetts.

*Harry S. Truman was the first president to have his Inauguration and speeches televised.

Ask Drs. Davis: “How do I get the most out of my orthodontic treatment?”

Tuesday, February 7th, 2012

We expect that all of our patients want the best possible outcome from their orthodontic treatment, which is something that Drs. Dale and Lisa Davis also want for them. To achieve this an orthodontist needs to be a great communicator. We believe a great communicator has to answer questions that a patient or their family doesn’t think to ask. Drs. Dale and Lisa also make sure to be available for questions that patients may think of later.

At Davis and Davis Orthodontics, we invite the family into the clinical area at each appointment to be updated on their child’s progress. A doctor needs to paint the picture of the outcome, along with the benefits of that outcome. The benefits are, certainly, improved appearance and, many times, self esteem, but also improved function. Qualities that make a great patient is a desire to be a part of the outcome and being compliant. Being a part of the treatment means asking questions and desiring to know how he or she is progressing through treatment. Being compliant requires wearing appliances as instructed, brushing well, not damaging the appliances, and being at each of his or her scheduled appointments.

Patients who play an active part in treatment really do get the best outcomes. This is the best way for a patient and their family to approach treatment, as it improves communication between the doctor and patient. We’ll always do our best at Davis and Davis Orthodontics to do our part!
